Beta Reading and Editing Services

Have you finished your novel, novella, or short story? Congratulations!

Now is the time for some to read through it and offer feedback, or for someone to edit the story. I’m that someone!

Beta Reading ($30 + $2 per 1,000 words)

How does it work? I will read through your manuscript, whether it be a short story or full-length novel, and offer helpful, honest, and critical advice and feedback about pacing, clarity, structure, and content.

My intent is never to disparage you or your work, simply to provide clear and honest feedback.

I usually read in Microsoft Word or Pages.

It goes without saying that anything you send to me will be forever yours and you retain all publishing and legal rights.

(For a pricing example, if your manuscript is 60,000 words, I charge $150.)

Proofreading/Copyediting (¢1 per word)

I read through your book with Track Changes on and make line edits related to:

  • tone
  • pacing
  • wordiness
  • clarity
  • character development
  • ensure the dialogue matches the character
  • grammar
  • word choice
  • spelling
  • punctuation
  • plot suggestions
  • inconsistencies in author’s voice
  • highlight any sections that are redundant, ambiguous, or simply unnecessary

I prefer to start with a sample of your writing, usually around 500-1000 words, to get an understanding of your work and determine if there are any critiques or edits I can offer.

I cannot guarantee a perfect edit. Publishing houses pay editors upwards of $20,000 to edit novels and even they miss things, resulting in published novels with typos. No edit is perfect, but mine will be the best I can make it.

Exactly what I was hoping for! Great Beta Read. Nathaniel caught the details and offered structural, stylistic, and qualitative suggestions for improvement. All excellent.
